The foundation of an undeniable University in Jaffna had been a long standing goal of the general population of Jaffna. This was satisfied when a grounds of the University of Sri Lanka was built up in 1974 by a request made by the Honorable Minister of Education. Professor Sivasubramaniam Pathmanathan is a Sri Lankan Tamil historian, academic, author and current chancellor of the University of Jaffna followed by the Prof.Ratnam Vigneswaran the voice chancellor of the University, The University also holds several journals, the university has developed massively and is today the home of eight resources with fifty seven scholarly offices, a few administration/scholastic/bolster units and focuses and a Campus at Vavuniya, around 130 Km from Jaffna.
