Togus VAMC is a 67-operating bed facility with general medical, surgical, intermediate and mental health beds, as well as a 100-bed Nursing Home consisting of 50 Skilled and Longer Stay beds, and a 50-bed Dementia Unit. The oldest veterans facility in the country, having opened in the fall of 1866, Togus is located five miles east of Augusta, the state capital. Togus campus encompasses 500+ acres of buildings and natural woodlands serving as natural habitats for Maines wildlife. Additionally, the National Cemetery is located on the Togus campus.
History of Togus: This link provides historical and pictorial information from the beginning as the Eastern Branch of the National Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers through the creation of the Veterans Administration in 1930 and up to present.
Mission: VAMC Togus exists to serve the veteran through the delivery of timely quality care by staff who demonstrate outstanding customer service, the advancement of health care through research and the education of tomorrows health care providers.

The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nations oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. To earn and maintain The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years. The Joint Commission standards deal with the organizations quality of care and the safety in which care is provided.
