Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya

Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya is an autonomous, research and educational organization working for the up-liftment of farmers livelihood of Chhattisgarh. It was established in 1987 on January 20. Research & education are the major activities coordinated through agriculture, veterinary, dairy and agricultural engineering faculties and Directorates of instruction, research and extension. This university received grants from ICAR, State Government and international agencies. During British government in India they established agriculture research station in 1903 s “Labhandi Farm” at Raipur. This farm is slowly grown and now become the campus of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya. Rice is the main crop grown during the monsoon season (June-September). It plays a major the role and responsibility because it has to cater the needs of socio-economically resource poor, relatively illiterate and tribal farmers with tradition bound agriculture. Main objectives are 1. Undertake basic, applied and adaptive research to evolve appropriate solution and technology. 2. Diversification of crops and farming systems. 3. Collaboration with the state, national and international research institution 4. Imparting knowledge and education to the people engaged in agriculture and allied fields. 5. Developing educational and research networks in agriculture and allied field for the state agriculture and allied sectors. They produced several varieties of rice breeds and others crop varieties some are 1. Rice – IGKV R 1 (R 1124-258-3-86-1) 2. Rice – IGKV R 2 (R 1243-1224-578-1) 3. Cashew-Indira Kaju -1 4. Horsegram-Indira Kulthi – 1 5. Cowpea-Indira Barbati Lal It has evolved and released more than 52 varieties of different crops. Indira sona and Indira Kakoda are the first public bred rice hybrid in the state and first worlds spine gourd variety. Research in the university organized in three levels of zone, region and station. For agro-climatic zone wise problems, they have setup the zonal research stations cum colleges in each zone which are made further stronger with regional and research stations in Chhattisgarh. They looked up in major areas of research in the University consists of crop improvement, crop production, crop protection, identifying new varieties of vegetables, fruits and flower, forestry, medicinal and aromatic plants, developing agricultural implements, fisheries research and production, veterinary and land and water management in problematic areas (20-30%) research and application. They are releasing the daily weather data for every month and they also published articles in Journal of Agricultural issues (JAI). The University intends to strengthen the agricultural science to develop a strong and efficient manpower that would cater to the needs of the rural areas.
