ITRI was founded in 1973which is a non-profit R&D aiming at innovations for a better future by engaging itself in applied research and technical services. It completely dedicates its services in helping industries to stay competitive and sustainable through smart living, quality health and sustainable environment nurturing more than 240 companies such as TSMC and UMC along with making 140 CEOs in the local high-tech industry. The services offered by ITRI have contributed largely to Taiwan’s economic growth as it shifted from a labour-intensive industry into a value-added innovative industry. ITRI has international links and collaborations with companies like Corning Glass, Underwriters Laboratories, and Applied Materials of the United States; NRC of Canada, Asahi Kasei, Nidec, and AIST of Japan; Evonik, Heraeus, and Fraunhofer of Germany; TNO of the Netherlands; VTT of Finland; Ericsson of Sweden which helps it to remain competitively connected globally . It has been recognized by prestigious honors such as the Wall Street Journals Technology Innovation Awards and R&D 100 Awards. ITRI management is well organised and managed thoroughly by a series of board of directors with presidents, vice presidents, directors, executive directors and general directors with Tsung-Tsong Wu as the chairman and Jonq-Min Lu as the current president. ITRI Today is a quarterly English publication which publishes the current reports and achievements on the latest R&D innovations, international collaborations, awards and honours and other infrastructure, technical and research developments. In 2014 ITRI has become the first research institute in Taiwan to win 2014 Top 100 Global Innovators award by Thomson Reuters. It has made innumerable great innovations like SpeedPro, Ultrafast Rechargeable Aluminum Battery (URABat), Wearable Walking Assistive Exoskeleton Robot (2WA-EXO), Long-Distance Floating Multi-Screen Head-Up Display (HUD) Technology, iSmartweaR, In-Line Compact Thermal Analyzer, High Efficiency Calcium Looping Technology (HECLOT) to name a few. It works with ICT, cloud computing, big data to develop intelligent services, health care, diagnostics to maintain quality health, works towards green energy development, and carbon reduction to develop a sustainable environment. ITRI open lab concept established in 1996 has served over 350 companies. ITRI green campus programme reduces carbon emissions, uses sustainable green technologies such as smart grids, updated and replaced old low efficient facilities and there by improved energy savings for sustainable environment. By 2015, it enabled ITRI to achieve an annual savings of 10 million kWh, besides it reduces 19,285 tons of carbon emissions, 25,000 tons of recycled water, 1.71% water leakage rate, and increased vegetation coverage ratio to 124%.It provides with technologies for public welfare through education and innovations.
