The Institute of Food Science & Technology (IFST) is the leading institute for Europian food professionals in and the only professional body in the UK concerned with all aspects of food science and its technology. Our membership comprises individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, from students to experts, working across all aspects of food science and technology, and from academia through to services. The main aim of this institute is to facilitate the development and sharing of knowledge underlying food science and technology and its application, provide an independent, representative and responsive sound on food science and technology issues on behalf of those working in the sector – whether in academia, business, education, research or Government Departments and Agencies. Establish and promote advanced professional development its standards and ethics for those working in any way within this field. To encourage the highest caliber and new entrants to the sector by the promotion of food science and technology which is an exciting, worthwhile and aspirational career path. The main mission of this institute is to be respected and engaged with relevant stakeholder communities as it is the UK’s leading food science & technology body. The main strategies are: to extend the sharing of relevant, accessible food science and technology knowledge amongst its members and to its chosen stakeholder groups, to use its unique, independent, evidence-based voice to influence key stakeholders on relevant food science and technology related topics, to grow its critical role in setting and accrediting professional standards for food scientists and technologists, to increase its number of members in a genuine way across all categories of membership and encourage the members participation in its activities, to further develop their own career development and contribute to the Institute’s activities, to ensure that a stream of new talent enters the food profession and that students, together with their learning institutions, are actively engaged with and supported by the Institute. We will also promote food science and technology as an excellent career option and lastly to ensure it has sustainable income streams by commitment to priorities 1 to 5 above and by continuing to develop new products/services that meet the changing needs of members and the sector generally and will act as a support to effective cost control and sound financial and risk management. IFST members make up a network over 2,500 industry professionals united by a passion for food science and technology, a thirst for knowledge, a high standard of professionalism, and a desire to advance the sector. IFST has seven regional branches across UK, as well as hubs, for areas with a high volume of IFST members. Regions bring together members in close proximity to plan or attend events such as factory visits or conferences, running competitions and meetings.
