Marshall University was started as a subscription school by residents of Guyandotte and the surrounding area. In the year 1838 it was dedicated as Marshall Academy though it was not a college level institution which was named as Marshall College after 20 years.

It is a public university with around 14000 students studying. It also has a non-residential branch mainly for graduate education in southern half of the state. It even offers graduate courses under three main centers. The university mainly aims for transferring the technologies from academic level to industry level to aid in increasing the job opportunities.
