Shiga University

Shiga University, or Shigadai is a national university in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It has campuses at the cities of Ōtsu and Hikone. The predecessor of the school was founded in 1943, and it was chartered as a university in 1949. Shiga University was established as one of the new national universities in 1949 against the historical and cultural background of Ohmi Province surrounding Lake Biwa, now the modern Shiga Prefecture. The university inherited the torch of its pre-war predecessors, Shiga Normal School and Hikone Commercial College. Since its establishment Shiga University has developed educational and research activities through launching, among other things, research centers and postgraduate courses. To fulfill its new role as a national university, it has been at the forefront in educating talented individuals for their future professional careers. In 2000, the university promulgated its mission statement under the title of: ""Pioneering the 21st Century of Intelligence: The Ideal of Shiga University."" The Otsu campus of Shiga University has its origin in the establishment of Shiga Normal School in Otsu in 1874. This school was reorganized as the Shiga College of Education in 1943. Upon the founding of Shiga University in May, 1949, the Shiga College of Education and the Shiga Teachers Training College were brought together as the Faculty of Liberal Arts. The Hikone campus has its origin in the establishment of the Hikone Commercial College in 1922. This college was reorganized in 1944 as the Hikone College of Economics. At the time Shiga University was founded in May, 1949, the college became the Faculty of Economics. The administrative offices of the university are located on the Hikone campus.
