Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ananthapuramu, had its beginning as a Postgraduate Centre of Sri Venkateswara University in the year 1967-68. It gained autonomy in the year 1976. Fulfilling the desires of the people of the region, the Autonomous Postgraduate Centre was accorded the status of a University in the year 1981. Initially, Sri Krishnadevaraya University functioned as a unitary University. It was conferred the status of an affiliating University in the year 1988. Presently, it caters to the higher education needs of Rayalaseema region in general and Ananthapuramu District in particular. The Postgraduate Centre at Kurnool, which was brought under the jurisdiction of the University in the year 1993, became a separate University in 2008. Starting with just five departments of study and a hundred students, the University has now five colleges on the campus: SKU College of Arts, SKU College of Sciences, SKU College of Engineering and Technology, SKU College of Education, and SKU College of Pharmacy.   Situated in rural environs in a campus of over 500 acres (2.0 km2) of land, the university includes a University Science Instrumentation Centre, a Computer Centre, a Health Centre, a gymnasium, an outdoor stadium, an auditorium and space to accommodate departments of studies, laboratories, hostels, and housing for the staff. SKU College of Arts has 13 Departments offering 18 PG courses besides one UG course. SKU College of Sciences has 16 Departments offering 19 PG courses. SKU College of Engineering and Technology, started in 2006-07, offers M. Tech. in three branches and B. Tech. in five branches. SKU College of Education, started in 2007-2008, offers M.Ed. and B.Ed. programmes. SKU College of Pharmacy, started in 2008-2009, offers M. Pharmacy with three specializations and B. Pharmacy programmes. It has 86 affiliated colleges offering undergraduate courses and 18 colleges offering post-graduation courses.   The library has back volumes on the stacks numbering 13,600. There is one SC/ST Book Bank, INFLIBNET facility,and software for University Libraries (SOUL). The collaboration involves exchange visits from both sides to enhance the quality of research and infrastructure acquisition by the department of Biochemistry. Under the programme, FIST (Fund for Improving Science and Technology infrastructure), the departments of Biochemistry and Botany have been sanctioned Rs. 47 lakhs and Rs. 32 lakhs respectively for infrastructure development by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.   The department of Physics is engaged in designing equipment and inter-facing measuring instruments with micro- processors. The Herbarium of the Department of Botany is an internationally recognized one. It is one of the 52 herbaria in India which is given the acronym S.K.U. It has a collection of more than 25,000 specimen. The Biochemistry Department has entered into a collaboration agreement with the Wellcome Trust, UK for promoting bilateral academic research. The University held a number of national and international conferences and seminars in the Departments of Physics, Mathematics, English, History, Economics and so on. There is also an Art and Archaeology Museum sanctioned by the University Grants Commission and attached to the Department of History. The Department of Mathematics has entered into a memorandum of Agreement with Lukov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute, Minsk, Belarus, for joint research, mutual collaboration on professional development programmes for the period from 2000 to 2005.
