University of Leuven is also known as Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven). It is situated in the heart of Western Europe, and has been a centre of learning for almost six centuries. KU Leuven is an autonomous university and the oldest extant Catholic university founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V. It continues to be a place for open discussion of social, philosophical and ethical issues and a critical centre of the Catholic community. KU Leuven offers an academic research-intensive education to its students, to prepare them for their social responsibilities.
