Laghouat, in Algeria, lies at the crossing point of major east-west and north-south routes in the southern foothills of the Saharan Atlas Mountains, giving it the name "Gateway to the Desert". It is located 400 kilometres (250 mi) south of the capital Algiers. Promoted as a university town in the program of decentralization to the Wilaya, training institutions were established in Laghouat in 1986. Created on September 18, 2001.
