In 1896 Xian Jiaotong University was founded in Shanghai as the Nanyang Public College, It is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China. Jiatong university was formed in 1956, the state council had made a decision to change location of university from Shanghai to western China, served as the pioneers in the “Grand Development of Western China” program. In 1959, the university was officially named as Xi’an Jiaotong University. During the National Seventh and Eighth five-Year Plans, the university has become “National Key Construction Project”. In the late 1990’s, “Project 211” and “Project 985” were selected for participation . It was designated by national government as of the elite groups of the country’s universities that should be developed into world –class universities. In April 2000, with the approval of the State council of China, by the approval of state council of China , University was merged with Xian Medical University and Shaanxi institute of finance and economics. Xi’an Jiaotong University focus on science and engineering. Its programs cover the fields of science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, arts, law, philosophy, and education There are faculty members from American academy of engineering, British Royal Academy and third-world academy of science. In 1950, university has become first listed, it has been authorised to accept international students of Chinese Government scholarship. Till now the university has trained 5,000 international students from around 52 countries. Main languages which students prefer are English and Chinese
