In the year 1838 it was dedicated as Marshall Academy though it was not a college level institution which was named as Marshall College after 20 years.

It is a public university with around 14000 students studying. It also has a non-residential branch mainly for graduate education in southern half of the state. It even offers graduate courses under three main centers.
