The review incorporates a comprehensive analysis of recent literature, encompassing studies published between 2010 and 2022, sourced from databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library. Keywords such as "nipple fissures," "breastfeeding pain," and "skin treatment" were utilized in the search strategy. Skin treatments targeting nipple fissures and pain mitigation were categorized into several key modalities. Emollient-based therapies, such as lanolin and medical-grade breast creams, have been widely studied for their moisturizing and protective effects on nipple skin. Silicone nipple shields, another prevalent intervention, offer a physical barrier and aid in reducing friction during breastfeeding. The analysis explores the efficacy of hydrogel dressings and their role in promoting wound healing and pain relief. Additionally, studies on the application of human milk, with its inherent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, as a natural remedy for nipple fissures, are discussed.
