Abstract

A serious mental illness (SMI), such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression, can reduce a person's life expectancy by 10 to 20 years. This is explained by an elevated risk of physical illness, notably cardiovascular disease for which type 2 diabetes is a significant risk factor. SMI is linked to a two- to three-fold greater incidence of type 2 diabetes, according to cohort studies and a health gap that may be getting wider for some mental disorders despite little research, there may be circumstances when people with diabetes are more at risk of developing macro vascular and microvascular problems.
