Bielefeld University was founded in 1969 with an explicit research assignment and a mission to provide high-quality research-oriented teaching. Presently, it encompasses 13 faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and technology. On 1980, the University was amalgamated with the Bielefeld section of the state teacher training college Pädagogische Hochschule Westfalen-Lippe with the departments at the teacher training college being matched subject by subject to those at the University. One very special unit is the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF). Basically, it has the same status as a faculty. This is where (short-term) workshops and (long-term) research groups meet to develop, discuss, and research topics located either on the margins or on the interfaces between the increasingly more specialized single disciplines. Since 1 January 2007, the law stipulates that the central body for all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia should be the University Council advises the Rektorat and oversees its management activities
