National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) is a premier organisation involved in Research and Development under Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. NIH was established in 1978 with the main objective of undertaking, aiding, promoting and coordinating systematic and scientific work in all aspects of hydrology. It was established as an autonomous society and is fully funded and aided by the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. The Institute was declared as an S&T organisation in 1987. NIH has acquired the status of the premier Research Institution of India. Some of the major achievements of the Institute since its establishment include: â¢ Publications brought out by the Institute in the form of technical reports, pamphlets, brochures, leaflets, state-of-art reports etc. These publications have been widely circulated to various user agencies in India as well as abroad. â¢ Major research findings in the form of reports and research papers are published in reputed international and national journals, international and national seminars/ symposia/ conferences. â¢ The Institute has completed a number of consultancy and sponsored research projects to solve real life field problems. â¢ The Institute has developed software for hydrological analysis and design. â¢ The Institute has established Water Quality, Remote Sensing & GIS, Nuclear Hydrology, Soil & Water Laboratories and Groundwater Modeling Unit with state-of-art equipment and software. â¢ Under technology transfer programme, the Institute has organised a number of training courses all over the country on different topics relevant to hydrology and water resources. The Institute has also organised number of international, National and regional activities. â¢ A number of the scientists of the Institute have received awards for publishing their excellent research works in the reputed journals and for their significant contributions in different areas of hydrology and water resources. â¢ Under the mass awareness programme, the Institute has organized a number of activities for women and children. Campaigns for water conservation and management have been launched through electronic and print media. â¢ The Institute has completed a number of international collaborative projects with funding from international organisations. These include: two UNDP Projects, WAMTARA, EEC funded SHE Model, USAID funded Paleoflood studies, World Bank Aided Hydrology Project-I etc. The Institute is currently involved in Hydrology Project Phase II funded by World Bank. â¢ The Institute is providing secretariat to the Indian National Committee on Climate Change (INCCC), an R&D programme of MoWR. The functions of the secretriat include undertaking studies on evolution of climate change and introduce perspective planning for research in climate change. â¢ The Institute is providing Secretariat to the Indian Association of Hydrologists. Through its strategic plan, NIH has acquired a leadership role in the area of hydrology. The basic and result-oriented research and development programs are integrated and executed using very innovative, dynamic and focused team of scientists. The future prospects of NIH are tremendous. We are establishing collaborations with National and International Organizations and Institutes. NIH is growing in an era of unparalleled scientific and technological advancement.
