The Sahlgrenska University Hospital (Swedish: Sahlgrenska Universitetssjukhuset) is a system of hospitals associated with the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden. The hospital is named after philanthropist Niclas Sahlgren, and is one of the largest hospitals in Northern Europe. As a regional center, it serves approximately 900,000 people. The hospital also offers highly specialised medical care for the whole of Sweden. The staff numbers 17,000. History: The Sahlgrenska Hospital was founded in 1772 following a donation by Niclas Sahlgren. The current hospital was formed in 1997 by integrating three hospitals: Sahlgrenska Sjukhuset, Östra sjukhuset, and Mölndals sjukhus. The Sahlgrenska University Hospital has been operated by the Västra Götaland Regional Council since its formation in 1999. Facility changes through history: 1. 1772–1823 on Sillgatan, in present-day Postgatan; 2. 1823–1855 in the House of Oterdahl, today a museum of medical history; 3. 1855–1900 in Sociala Huset, since 2005, it has been a teaching school; 4. 1900–present in Änggården. On 24 June 2009, a 24,000 m2 (260,000 sq ft) new facility with 312 beds was officially opened. The new facility will enable rebuilding and renovation of older facilities at Sahlgrenska. The facility also features nephrology centre, dialysis, transplantation centre, stroke unit, hematology, and wards for medicine and surgery. We make a difference for peoples health through education and research in medicine, dentistry and healthcare science. Our study programmes are among the most popular in Sweden and we conduct international top research. At the Sahlgrenska Academy we have close collaboration with Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the Public Dental Service, in both our education and our research. Academy: Sahlgrenska Academy is the University of Gothenburgs faculty of education and research in health sciences. It operates in close conjunction with the university hospital. The academy was formed the 1st of July 2001 by combining the three previous faculties for medicine, odontology and health sciences. programs are available in pharmacy, biomedical analysis, dietitian sciences, physician, nursing, medical specialist, dentist, and medical physicist. Research: We conduct research and education in medicine, odontology and healthcare science. Top researchers, among them a Nobel Prize laureate, and young students come together under our roof – always in close contact with real-world healthcare. We are a young enterprise that doesn’t let convention or preconception stand in the way of progress. Instead, our doors are open to collaboration – wherever it might help us to see new perspectives with better ways to prevent or treat illness. We often choose an approach that is close to the patient. We collaborate with Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the Public Dental Service.
