Extension offices, research parks and the U of I hospital expand the reach of the university. Board of Trustees Overseeing the 80,000-student institution is the Board of Trustees and the U of I president. Along with the chancellor/vice president of each campus, the board and president drive the university’s commitment to its core missions of education, research, public service and economic development. The Board of Trustees consists of 13 members, 11 who have official votes. Nine are appointed by the Governor for terms of six years, and three student trustees (one from each campus) are elected by referenda on their campuses for one-year terms. One student trustee is appointed by the Governor to have an official vote. The Governor serves as an ex-officio member. Top Research: UIC offers that experience to every student. Programs throughout the university match students with scholars who help them further their research interests and achievements. Advising, matching, mentoring and internships are available. The Undergraduate Research Experience pairs students with faculty who have the same research interests. The Honors College programs, including the Undergraduate Research Assistant Program, match Honors College students after their freshman year with faculty in business, education, engineering, the humanities and the arts, natural sciences, mathematics and the social sciences. Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences can learn more about undergraduate research programs in their field, and information about financial support, from the Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Initiative. Beginning the summer after their first year, students in the College of Engineering can be matched into paid internships through the Engineering Career Center.
