Theodor Bilharz Research Institute

      The name Theodor Bilharz Research Institute came from the name of the scientist Theodor Bilharz, he was a German scientist who discovered, the causative agent of haematuria: Schistosoma worm in autopsy material at Kasr El Aini Hospital, during his work in Egypt in 1851. The main idea of initiating the institute was done by via high council of science during 1960 because of schistosomiasis problem in Egypt particularly population in the rural areas and its main impact on their socioeconomic life. The main objective of the institute was to control, diagnosis and management of this disease from all ascepts.     Ahmed Hafez Mousa, he was one of the worlds pioneers in the field of Tropical Medicine and the real originator of this institute and was charged to fulfill this idea in 1960. He started a small nuclear start, preliminary location for this project at Kasr El Aini under the Tropical Medicine Department and Faculty of Medicine which was appointed by him. This was followed by the establishment of a "Laboratory for Schisosomiasis Research" in the chemistry building of the National Research Center.     In April 1962, the foundation of the institute was executed at Warak El Haders village and the institution was constructed by Egyptian Government. In 1964 the equipment’s for hospital and laboratories were bought through an agreement between the governments of Federal Republic of Germany and Egypt. The attached hospital was completed in 1981and started in 1983. The construction of the institution was accomplished and was officially affiliated to the Ministry of Scientific Research in 1977 and from 1979-1987 Ahmad Algarim became the head of the institute. From 1987-1994, Aly Zain Al- Abdeen became the head of the institute. The present chair person is Prof. Hanan Al Baz.     TBRI is both medical research and training institution which is affiliated to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Moreover, the institution offers medical services in specific specialties mainly Department of Immunology (overall 8 members) and Department of Parasitology (overall 3 members). TBRI Mission     The main mission of TBRI is to target the schistosomiasis mainly responsible for endemic diseases by controlling, diagnosing and managing the disease which especially those affecting the liver, the gastrointestinal and the urinary tracts and their complications. This mission is mainly to meet the social, economic and technological needs of religious areas of Egypt. TBRI Vision     The main vision of TRBI is to be a leading research centre and training institution in diagnosing, controlling and managing the endemic diseases in the Egypt region. TBRI strategy The Strategy covers seven items:
1. Research strategy to Conduct coordinated and applied research.
2. Intensify the use of technology for the empowerment and development of human resources
3. Information and communication development to integrate the scientific viewpoints.
4. Improvement of medical services
5. Resource development and capacity building.
6. Quality control and assurance
7. Scientific cooperation with local and international agencies and institutions. The total members in TBRI IA 103 and they have published total 446 Publications.
