The University of Fort Hare was founded in the year 1916 and it has been a key institution in higher education for black Africans. It had offered a western style academic education to students across sub Saharan Africa.
Now the university was recognized as a part of South Africas post-apartheid public higher education system. At present it has around 11,000 students. The university is having five faculties which offers qualifications upto doctoral level. It is one of the public universities and the main campus is located at Alice.
The main motto of the university is “In your light we shall see the light”.
