Spain is a sovereign state which is located in South West of Europe with an island chain between Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Spain is the considered as second largest country in West Europe and in the European Union, and the fourth largest country in Europe.

To the extreme south of Spain there lies the Gibraltar Straits which separates the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe from Ceuta and Morocco in North Africa and is considered as the third highest country in Europe.

Spain has the fourteenth-largest economy in the world and fifth-largest in the European Union. Spain is classified as high income economy among the countries of very high human development. In 1973, the beginning of modern marine aquaculture was traced which began with the cultivation of mollusks. The development of aquaculture was still expanding due to the high quality of the aquatic resources. There are many lists of aquaculture journals which emphasize in the field of aquaculture and Spain is one of the countries which maintain aquaculture journals in regular frequency.

With the aim of creating innovation in the field of research and development, Spain is spending more and more expenditure in the research side and therefore gaining good gross domestic product in this aquaculture field. Spain has established a good platform for aquaculture research especially in terms of fish production which is growing rapidly in the recent years.

There are many marine institutes in Spain such as Mediterranean Marine and Environmental Research Centre and Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Blanes which were supported by the Spanish Government are considered as leading aquaculture research institutes and offering good research in the field of aquaculture. There have been numerous lists of aquaculture journals in Spain such as Scientia Marina, Thalassas and many other Spain aquaculture journals which are running with good number of articles and good reputation.
