Dr. Shin-Wook Kang is a Professor of the Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine and of Severance Biomedical Science Institute at Yonsei University as well as the Director of the Division of Nephrology, Yonsei University Health System, Seoul, Korea. He graduated in Medicine from Yonsei University in 1986 and received his Ph.D. degree at Yonsei University Graduate School in 1995. He served as the Director of the Collaborative Studies, the Scientific Program, and the External Affairs and Cooperation of the Korean Society of Nephrology. Recently, in addition, he played a role as a key member of the Working Group for “ISPD Guidelines on Assessment and Management of Various Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Chronic Adult Peritoneal Dialysis Patients” for more than 2 years and took the responsibility for ‘Glycemic Control in Diabetic Peritoneal Dialysis Patients’ and ‘Protein-Energy Wasting’ sections. He is a trained nephrologist, albeit part time to take care of patients with diabetes. His researches focus mainly on basic and clinical with the major goal to prevent or reverse the progression of chronic kidney disease, particularly diabetic nephropathy. He is also interested in cardiovascular complications in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. He has received a number of honor including the Professor of the Year 2001, 2004, and 2014, which were elected by the corresponding years’ graduates of Yonsei University College of Medicine, the Best Customer Satisfaction Doctor of the Year 2009, Yonsei University Health System, and the Scientific Award of the Year 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013 from the Korean Society of Nephrology. His recent research has focused on not only the role of renin-angiotensin system on podocytes and glomerular endothelial cells under diabetic conditions but also a simple way to generate knockdown or knockout mice. He is regularly participating international meetings and has over 200 peer reviewed publications.
