Russia is the world's largest country with its vast territory that occupies the east of Europe and the north of Asia, i.e. 11.46% of the Earth's land area. Russia officially known as the Russian Federation is a sovereign state in northern Eurasia. Russia has over 1,000 major cities, 16 of which have a metro population of more than one million.
The Russian Federation is the largest of the 21 republics that make up the Commonwealth of Independent States. It occupies most of Eastern Europe and north Asia, stretching from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Black Sea and the Caucasus in the south. Russia is washed by the waters of twelve seas and three oceans: the Arctic in the north, the Atlantic in the west and the Pacific in the east. The country has thousands of rivers and about 2 million lakes, among which are the Caspian Sea, the biggest lake in the world, and Baikal, the world's deepest fresh-water lake.
Russia has a high-income mixed economy with state ownership in strategic areas of the economy. Russia relies on energy revenues to drive growth. Russia has an abundance of oil, natural gas and precious metals, which make up a major share of Russia's exports. Russia’s economy decreased substantially last year, hampered by a combination of low oil prices, international sanctions, a sharp depreciation of the ruble and structural weakness.
More than 30 Russian Universities are enlisted in the legendary world-wide by WHO. According to SCImago Russia is ranked in 28th position with good number of publications in the various Journals of Hematology that are published worldwide. The National Centre for Hematology in the capital city of Russia, Moscow has collaborations with many other associations globally contributing their efficient work in the field of Diabetes and shares their work through various publications in Russia hematology journals. Russia's National Research Center for Hematology has a prominent role the development of blood banking.
