Saudi Arabia has an oil-based economy. The petroleum sector accounts for almost all of Saudi government revenues and export earnings. Saudi oil reserves are the second largest in the world as oil exporter and second largest producer. Research & Development activities are conducted by specialized units or centers belonging to state agencies, universities and companies. A high technology company such as a computer manufacturer, pharmaceutical companies and engineering companies.

In informatics this nation produced 12 Nobel laureates so far. The King Saud bin Abduaziz University for health sciences is the leading Institution informatics research in Saudi Association for Health Informatics. According to the Bahkali S et al. report by profiling users, developing a national PHIS and monitoring the impact of PHIS on healthcare outcomes need to be addressed. Several leading Institution of informatics in the country including others are spearheading the medical research. Numerous informatics journals are published from Saudi Arabia with good reputation.
