Biography

Dr. Phinney received Undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Vermont, a PhD in Biochemistry from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and was an American Cancer Society Fellow at Fox Chase Cancer Center where he studied Transcriptional Regulation of the proto-oncogene junB. Dr. Phinney then spent nine years at Tulane University advancing to the rank of Professor of Immunology and Microbiology and Associate Director of Research at the Center for Gene Therapy. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Molecular Therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Florida where he studies the basic biology, transplantation immunology and anti-inflammatory activity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) using a variety of animal models. Dr. Phinney is an NIH funded investigator, served as Co-Editor of the journal Stem Cells, and currently serves on the MSC committee for the International Society of Cell Therapy (ISCT).

Research Interest

Mesenchymal stem cells, basic stem cell biology, stem cell characterization, transplantation immunology, chronic inflammatory diseases of lung, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Interview

1. How many years have you been practicing and/or performing research?
I have been working as an independent investigator for approximately 15 years.

2. What is the research topic you are working on now?
My laboratory is divided into two main areas of research. The first is adult stem cell biology and cell-based therapy and the other is development of novel cancer therapeutics.

3. What makes an article top quality?
Top quality articles describe innovative findings by using rigorous, complimentary methods of scientific investigation.

4. What are the qualities you look for in an article?
I look for redundancy in methodological approaches, reliability and consistency of results, clarity of writing, and innovative findings.

5. Do you have any research funding (NIH or other national funding) now?
Yes

6. When did you become an editor of OMICS Journal?
2012

7. What is your greatest career accomplishment?
The research we are currently pursuing is the most exciting and impactful of my career.

8. How does the research published percolate through to practitioners?
Historically, scientific discoveries that withstood scrutiny from the community at large were often translated to practice but we have entered an era when even untested therapies are rapidly being advanced into the clinical arena. This is most evident in the cell therapy field.

9. What is the purpose of serving as an editor?
I believe the purpose of an editor is to maintain a high standard of ethics in publishing, identify papers that are impactful and employ rigorous science, and provide constructive feedback to authors.

10. Do you have any patents?
Yes

11. Have you contributed any editorials or papers (any types) to OMICS Journals in the past two years?
Yes

12. Do you plan to contribute any editorials or papers to OMICS Journals in the next year?
Yes

13. Do you have any trouble with OMICS Journals in the past?
No

14. Would you recommend OMICS to your friends or colleagues?
Yes

15. How do you differentiate Translational Medicine with other journals in the field?
I believe Translational Medicine is unique based on the range of topics covered by the journal, the fact that it is open access, and the wide ranging expertise of the editorial board.
