Michael Aschner is the Gray E B Stahlman Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Pediatrics at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His research interests are in the Neurobiology and Physiology of astrocytes and the mechanisms of CNS injury Current studies address gene environment interactions in mercury and manganese induced neurotoxicity and carried out in C elegans and rats. The impact of manganese on neurodevelopment is assessed in human neonates by means of MRI. Dr. Aschner has served on numerous national and international toxicology panels Institute of Medicine EPA CDC served and chaired the ALTX3 NIH study section. He has authored 8764; 350 peer reviewed manuscripts and chapters and serves as an Associate Editor for Neurotoxicology and Toxicological Sciences. He has been a member of the Society of Toxicology SOT and the Academy of Toxicological Sciences. He held the presidency of the International Neurotoxicology Association. He is also the recipient of the 2010 SOT Merit Award.

Research Interest

Cellular & Molecular mechanisms of heavy metal neurotoxicity,Gulf War syndrome, Neurodegeneration,Neuron-glia interaction.

1. How many years have you been practicing and/or performing research?
30-plus years. I started my PhD in 1980.

2. What is the research topic you are working on now?
Our studies address basic mechanisms in various experimental models (C. elegans, tissue cultures and rodents) as well as follow-up on the sequalae of heavy metal deposition in the brains of human neonates. Our studies apply controlled methods for manipulating the cellular machinery to provide insight into both basic biology and the mechanistic events leading to clinical disease. This pilot RFK IDDRC pilot proposal will (i) increase the understanding of the genetic influences on health especially as it relates to neurodevelopmental diseases; (ii) increase knowledge of the pathway involved in Mn-induced toxicity as well as the impact of these processes on developmental CNS disease; (iii) develop improved research models for childrens disease using our knowledge of environmental sciences and biology; and (iv) use environmental toxicants to understand basic mechanisms in developmental neurobiology.

3. What makes an article top quality?
Importance of the Topic
Informative Abstract
Sound Study Design
Methods with strong rigor
Mechanistic and hypothesis-driven approach

4. What are the qualities you look for in an article?
Importance of the Topic to the Journal’s readership
Significant research question and important study topic
Readership interest
Sound Study Design
Sound methods
Mechanistic and hypothesis-driven approach

5. Do you have any research funding (NIH or other national funding) now?
Yes - NIH

6. When did you become an editor of OMICS Journal?
2-3 years ago

7. What is your greatest career accomplishment?
The deciphering of mechanisms associated with metal-induced neurotoxicity, with paradigm shift that focuses on the glial role.

8. How does the research published percolate through to practitioners?
The translational value of the research is picked up by the readership, which is inclusive of regulators, risk assessors and clinicians.

9. What is the purpose of serving as an editor?
Assuring that the soundest and most rigorous science is recognized in hopes of advancing the understanding of mechanisms that govern health and disease.

10. Do you have any patents?

11. Have you contributed any editorials or papers (any types) to OMICS Journals in the past two years?

12. Do you plan to contribute any editorials or papers to OMICS Journals in the next year?

13. Do you have any trouble with OMICS Journals in the past?

14. Would you recommend OMICS to your friends or colleagues?

15. How do you differentiate journal of Clinical Toxicology with other journals in the field?
The journal of Clinical toxicology should specifically disseminate information on principles and practice of clinical toxicology, highlighting the role of poisons and drugs in disease etiology and offer potential therapeutic modalities.
