Mexico officially the United Mexican States is a federal republic located in North America.Mexico official name is United Mexican States, It is located at about 23° N and 102° W in the southern portion of North America. Since a brief civil war in 1920, Mexico has enjoyed a period of gradual agricultural, political, and social reforms. Following World War II, the government emphasized economic growth. Mexico became a major petroleum producer.The economy of Mexico is the 15th largest in the world in nominal terms and the 11th largest by purchasing power parity, according to the International Monetary Fund. Since the 1994 crisis, administrations have improved the country's macroeconomic fundamentals. Mexico was not significantly influenced by the recent 2002 South American crisis, and maintained positive, although low, rates of growth after a brief period of stagnation in 2001. Mexico was one of the Latin American nations most affected by the 2008 recession with its Gross Domestic Product contracting by more than 6%.

Mexico has a long-standing tradition in research in Mathematics Education. It was one of the first countries worldwide to have research groups specifically dedicated in this area. In 1988, the Journal  Matemática was born as the result of a fusion of several existing journals related with Mathematics teaching: Lecturas de Educación Matemática, Opera Prima, Matemáticas y Enseñanza y Boletín Informativo published by UNAM, Cinvestav, Sociedad Matemática Mexicana and Asociación Nacional de Profesores de Matemáticas. When this effort was initiated, several colleagues were invited with the goal of uniting efforts around a common objective: creating a mathamatic journal, written in Spanish, to publish results of Mathematics Education research in Mexico and other countries, in order to make them accessible to the wide community of Spanish-speaking teachers and researchers. In 1980, in an era when decentralization was an important part of Mexico’s national development, a group of academics from UNAM founded, in the city of Guanajuato, an institution dedicated to basic research and high-level education in the field of mathematics. Thus CIMAT (Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas A.C., Mathematics Research Center) was born. Over the years CIMAT’s academic activity has been diversified and expanded to the point where it is now the leading research institution in its field outside of Mexico City, thanks to the high academic standards of its researchers, its vast scientific output and its ever-increasing share of the international scientific scene.
