The Cultural Stress Theory of Obesity

Abstract

Regardless of the multitude of approaches available for reducing body fat, and the glut of information to educate patients on obesity and its health effects, obesity rates still climb year after year. To explain this phenomenon, scientists have indicated the existence of a “missing link” for as diligently as researchers have tried a singular cause that would explain the rise in rates, notwithstanding the plethora of interventions available, has been elusive until now. In spite of the differences from patient to patient, there appears to be one common denominator: psychological stress. This article will review the current literature as well as present persuasive evidence of the possible link between stress specifically cultural stress (a new kind of stress) and obesity. Accordingly, we will present the Cultural Stress Theory of Obesity, which suggests that through the evolution of our human experience, and as a course of “normal,” everyday living, our bodies are assaulted by a previously indefinable yet universal and pervasive kind of stress that can have a wide range of effects on the body externally, internally and emotionally. Further, the Cultural Stress Theory of Obesity may offer a plausible motive for why patients’ best efforts to reduce overweight may be hindered or only produce short-lived weight-loss results. A brief discussion of possible methods that may improve patient resistance to cultural stress as an underlying, root cause for obesity will also be included.
