South Korea is an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula and it shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. Moreover it’s equally known for its green, hilly countryside dotted with cherry trees and centuries-old Buddhist temples, plus its coastal tropical islands, fishing villages and high-tech cities such as Seoul, the capital. Korea is a 750-mile-long (1,200 km long) peninsula located in the easternmost part of the Asian continent. Today, the country is split into South and North Korea, but in the minds of most of its citizens, it remains a single nation that cannot be divided. The official name of South Korea is the Republic of Korea (ROK). That is because its government claims to be in charge of the whole of Korea and does not recognize North Korea as separate. The ROK government is headed by a president, who is elected to a five-year term. South Korea has one of the strongest economies in Eastern Asia. Most of its wealth comes from manufacturing and service industries, such as banking. It exports ships, cars, computers, and other electronic items.
