With a surface area of 547,030 km², or 211,209 sq. miles, metropolitan France is twice the size of the UK, and slightly smaller than the state of Texas. It is the biggest nation in Western Europe. France has land borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Andorra. It is also bordered by the North Sea, the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean.

France has the world's sixth-largest economy by nominal figures and the ninth largest economy by PPP figures. It has the third-largest economy in Europe with Germany and the UK in 1st and 2nd. The chemical industry is a key sector for France, helping to develop other manufacturing activities and contributing to economic growth. Sociology, from its earliest beginnings, has occupied a peculiar position in France. Social and political science entered French institutions of higher learning after it had gained scholarly acceptance notably through the work of Herbert Spencer.
