United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, the federal district of Washington, D.C., five major territories, and various possessions.

Geography of the country:

The country is situated in the central southern part of North America almost entirely in the western hemisphere. The USA is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the east and by the Pacific Ocean in the west. The mainland United States borders Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent with Canada to its east, and the state of Hawaii is in the mid-Pacific. The largest state is Alaska, the smallest - Rhode Island. Apart from the political states of the USA, the country also has territories outside which are "insular areas".

Status of Social & Political Science research and development:

Social policy is a term which is applied to various areas of policy, usually within a governmental or political setting such as the welfare state and study of social services. The United States is a liberal democracy with a federal political structure comprising 50 states and the District of Columbia. The federal government is characterized by a separation of powers between the executive, the legislative and the judiciary. The constituent states have significant powers of self-government. The executive is headed by the President, who is elected every four years through a national contest by universal suffrage. The states and the District of Columbia choose the President of the United States. Each state has presidential electors equal to the number of their Representatives and Senators in Congress; the District of Columbia has three.
