The university was found by a philanthropist Dr. Rajah Sri Annamalai Chettiar of Chittinad. He started several colleges and later on the University in 1929. After Dr. Rajah Sri Chettiar, his illustrious son Dr. Rajah Sri Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, who was a Pro-chancellor from 1948-1984 who took part in the growth and development of the University. The University has grown rapidly in 82 years and has consolidated its position as a unitary and residential University with forty –nine departments and also over three thousand two hundred and forty members on its teaching staff. The University, including colleges, hostels, playgrounds, occupies an area of about thousand acres. The following departments which are available in University are Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology, Fine Arts, Agriculture, Marine Science, Dentistry, Medicine, etc. The University has many hostels for the students who come down to pursue their degrees, UGs, PGs and Doctorial programs. The University library was started with few books, i.e. a token deposition of 200 books when Sri Meenakshi college was founded. The University also has an auditorium and Main library co-operative stores, Yoga centers, Hostels, Hospitals, Guest house Campus internet center.
