The University of Arizona is a public research university located in Tucson, Arizona, United States. UA was the first university in the state of Arizona, founded in 1885. The university includes the University of Arizona College of Medicine, which operates a medical center in Tucson, and a separate 4-year M.D. college in downtown Phoenix. As of the 2012-2013 calendar year, total enrollment was 40,223 students. he University of Arizona is governed by the Arizona Board of Regents. Arizona is awarded more NASA grants for space exploration than any other university nationally.[46] The UA was awarded over $325 million USD for its Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) to lead NASAs 2007–08 mission to Mars to explore the Martian Arctic. The LPLs work in the Cassini spacecraft orbit around Saturn is larger than that of any other university globally. This NASA mission to Mars carried a UA-designed camera is capturing the highest-resolution images of the planet ever seen. In August 2007, the UA, under the charge of Scientist Peter Smith, led the Phoenix Mars Mission, the first mission completely controlled by a university. The UA is leading a first-of-its-kind mission to send a spacecraft to a near-Earth asteroid in 2020. The spacecraft will scoop samples to bring back to Earth, helping us understand the origins of the Solar System.
