Biography

Andrew Shennan is Professor of Obstetrics at King’s College London and is involved in the Women’s Health work stream of the Zambia Partnership. Prof Shennan qualified with MBBS in 1980 from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School and became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1991. He was awarded his MD thesis from Imperial College, London, United Kingdom, in 1997. He leads the clinical research programme within the Women's Health Academic Centre at King’s College London into the causes of low birth weight and pre-eclampsia. In addition, he runs the research programme into the measurement of blood pressure in pregnancy and the development of accurate/novel ‘mercury-free’ devices. His research interests include prediction and prevention of pre-term birth and pre-eclampsia and measurement of blood pressure in pregnancy. He is Principal Investigator of ‘CRADLE’ a multi-country Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ‘Grand Challenges Explorations’ research project aimed at improving detection of pre-eclampsia in rural sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Prof Shennan is currently working with colleagues at Ndola Central Hospital in Zambia on implementing ultrasound training for staff at the hospital
