Esben Ostergaard Chief Technology Officer, Universal Robots, Denmark


As the Chief Technology Officer at Universal Robots, I am responsible for the enhancement of existing UR robots and the development of new products. I am one of the founder and inventors behind the UR robots. During the years from 2001 – 2005, as researcher and assistant professor in robotics and user interfaces at University of Southern, Denmark, I was part of creating the foundation for a reinvention of the industrial robot. In 2005, I founded Universal Robots together with two of my research colleagues. Besides my work as CTO, I am participating in national research projects and am also an external examiner at several universities in Denmark. Earlier in my career, I worked as research scientist at USC Robotics Labs and also at AIST in Tsukuba/Tokyo as a visiting researcher. During my studies in Computer Science, Physics and Multimedia at Aarhus University in Denmark, I divided my spare time between playin music on robot football, where my team STATIC became world champion in FIRA robot football in 1998. I was born in 1974 in Shiraz, Iran, where my dad worked as an Engineer for 5 years. Then moved to Cebu, Philippines, in 1978 where I started in School. We moved to Denmark in 1981. I played with LEGO, until I got a Commodore 64 in 1984. That naturally led to robotics.
