Dr. Burns graduated with a degree in English and Japanese from the University of Notre Dame and attended medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Burns completed his residency in neurology at the University of Virginia, a post-doctoral fellowship at the Alzheimer Disease Research Center at Washington University in St. Louis, and a Masters of Science in Clinical Research at the University of Kansas.
A native Kansan, Dr. Burns returned to Kansas City in 2004 to start the Alzheimer's disease clinical research program. The program was designated as one of the 29 national Alzheimer's Disease Centers in 2011. Dr. Burns' research program supports clinical trials testing new approaches to treating Alzheimer's disease and a variety of research projects focused on how lifestyle issues such as diet and exercise can be used to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and by generous contributions from the community.
