Neal Hinvest

Lecturer, Department of Psychology, University of Bath, UK

Biography

Dr Hinvest explores how cognitive and emotional processes that reside in our conscious and unconscious affect the decisions that we make. Processes that occur within our unconscious significantly drive our moment-to-moment behaviour in addition to the thoughts of which we are consciously aware. Therefore, investigating the unconscious is a critical factor in understanding our actions. To explore unconscious and conscious processes Dr Hinvest uses a wide range of tools, typically involving measuring brain activity, psychophysiological responses and/or behavioural testing. Dr Hinvest uses hyper-EEG (i.e. measuring EEG in multiple interacting individuals) to explore decision-making in social environments. The Department has multiple static EEG systems for high fidelity recording in addition to lightweight wireless EEG headsets that allow measuring of EEG in realistic or simulated environments. Using both these methods (high-fidelity and high ecological validity) allows unparalleled access to both conscious and unconscious psychological mechanisms involved in everyday decision-making.

Dr Hinvest has a special interest in financial decision-making and carries out work exploring unconscious and conscious cognitive and emotional psychological factors that affect decisions in such domains as investment, pension strategies and risk analysis in addition to others.
Dr Hinvest is a member of the CASTL (Cognition, Affective Science and Technology Labs).
