Joanne Chung

Chair Professor in the Department of Health and Physical Educatio,  Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Director of Associate Degree Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).

Biography

Professor Joanne Chung, Peter TC Lee Chair Professor of Health Studies, is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Director of Associate Degree Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).

Professor Chung started her academic career in 1993.  She was a professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s (PolyU) School of Nursing before she joined the EdUHK (formerly known as The Hong Kong Institute of Education) in 2009. 

Professor Chung is a pain specialist in both research and clinical practice.  Her creativity, leadership and perseverance in research activities in the emerging and potentially lucrative field of digital health and pain study are especially noteworthy.  She has been researching and developing an integrative pain management protocol for patients afflicted with cancer, chronic or idiopathic pain.  All these activities led her to many international awards in the past years.  Professor Chung also practises mindfulness and has extensive experience in the application of mindfulness in pain management and the offer of resilience building programmes.  She is a licensed trainer in Mindful Self-Compassion. 

Academically, she is also one of the pioneers in translational research particularly in the area of integrating Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and technology for the purpose of preserving good health.  She has published extensively over 100 databased papers in many international refereed journals and obtained 16 patents, out of which two are licensed for use.

Currently she serves as an advisor/member/director in various government and non-government organizations like the Hospital Governing Committee of Shatin Hospital, the Federation for Self-Financing Tertiary Education, the Elderly Care Service Industry Training Advisory Committee of the Education Bureau, the Kwai Tsing Safe Community and Healthy City Association (accredited by the World Health Organization), and internationally, she is a representative of the Hong Kong Region of the Telenursing in the International Council of Nurses taking care of urban sustainability.

Professor Chung has also devoted her effort in developing school health for reason that old habits die hard, and good healthy habits and lifestyles are best to start young.  Her ambition is to instill health concepts into our young children and fortify their resilience as they are the future masters of our society.  She believes good health education and practice will not just cut health financing cost but also change our city into a vibrant and joyful society.  Last but not the least, she is also serving as the convenor of the QK Blog (a subgroup of the Kwai Tsing Safe Community and Healthy City Association) which works with primary and secondary schools and other relevant stakeholders in managing school children health problems and promoting healthy lifestyles in the district.
