Russia is officially known as the Russian Federation. It
is a sovereign state in northern Eurasia and also federal semi-presidential republic. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history.

Russia's territorial expansion was achieved largely in the late 16th century under the Cossack Yermak Timofeyevich during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, at a time when competing city-states in the western regions of Russia had banded together to form one country. The Russian Federation is the largest of the 21 republics that make up the Commonwealth of Independent States. It occupies most of eastern Europe and north Asia, stretching from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Black Sea and the Caucasus in the south, the Atlantic in the west and the Pacific in the east. The country has thousands of rivers and about 2 million lakes, among which are the Caspian Sea, the biggest lake in the world, and Baikal, the world's deepest fresh-water lake.

Russia has a high-income mixed economy with state ownership in strategic areas of the economy. Russia relies on energy revenues to drive growth. Russia has an abundance of oil, natural gas and precious metals, which make up a major share of Russia's exports. Russia’s economy decreased substantially last year, hampered by a combination of low oil prices, international sanctions, a sharp depreciation of the ruble and structural weakness.
