Abstract

The mandate of Mintek is set out in the Mineral Technology Act (Act No. 30 of 1989), which is to serve the national interest through research, development and technology transfer, to promote mineral technology, and to foster the establishment and expansion of industries in the field of minerals and products derived therefrom. Mintek is a Research and Development (R&D) organisation that specialises in applied research in various scientific fields and we are publicly (50%) and privately (50%) funded. R & D activities are risky by nature, the outputs are often hard to measure and input - output relationships difficult to assess. In particular, it is difficult to estimate which investments in different resources or activities contribute to the outputs. In order for Mintek to achieve continuity and implementable outputs from the R & D strategy, it is necessary to work under a medium- to long-term strategy. The presentation will describe Mintek?s R & D Strategy, and provides the basis used for developing indicators to measure outputs. In the talk, the success of one of the R & D outputs called the Cynoprobe instrument in terms of bridging the ?Innovation Chasm? will also be discussed.
