Australia ranks as one of the best countries to live in the world by international comparisons of wealth, education, health and quality of life. The sixth-largest country by land mass, its population is comparatively small with most people living around the eastern and south-eastern coastlines. It is known as the land down under because it is below the equator.

Australia is a country, and a continent. It is located in Oceania between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean. It is the sixth largest country in the world with a total area of 7,686,850 square kilometres. The Australian mainland has a total coastline length of 35,876 km (22,292 mi) with an additional 23,859 km (14,825 mi) of island coastlines. Australia is the lowest, flattest, and oldest continental landmass on Earth and it has had a relatively stable geological history.

The economy of Australia is one of the largest mixed market economies in the world, with a GDP of AUD$1.62 trillion as of 2015. The Australian economy is dominated by its service sector, comprising 68% of GDP. The mining sector represents 7% of GDP; including services to mining, the total value of the mining industry in 2009-10 was 8.4% of GDP. Economic growth is largely dependent on the mining sector and agricultural sector (12% of GDP) with the products to be exported mainly to the East Asian market. Despite the recent decline of the mining boom in the country, the Australian economy has remained resilient and stable.

Since 1915 there have been fifteen Australian winners of the Nobel Prize. The majority of these prizes (eight) have been awarded in the field of Physiology or Medicine, and include the second youngest ever laureate William Lawrence Bragg, who was awarded the prize at 25 years of age. He won this Nobel Prize for Physics with this father William Bragg in 1915.  There is a tremendous research going on in the field of Biotechnology in Australia. Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is the leading Institution in Biotechnology in Australia. Australia is ranked as the 17th most innovative nation in the world, according to the Global Innovation Index.
