Abstract

The paper explores how health gerontology and physical change appear during the ageing process. While biogerontology focuses on physical mechanisms of ageing, health gerontology discusses health status in old age and health care for older people. Among the older Iranians dementia like diabetes is one of the common ailments. Though most advanced countries have well-developed health and long-term care systems that help families support care to frail older people, yet Iran has to go a long way to be able to provide support to the increasing people with dementia. While population ageing is appearing more than ever before, the relevant departments must be equipped to react to the demographic change with special reference to the people with dementia. However, researchers predict the older people will become even more numerous in the future with more likelihood of dementia. Gerontology studies the social contacts and social conditions of the elderly people with special reference to those with ailments such dementia. While social interaction and social roles change as population age, elderly people?s health conditions also undergo inevitable changes such as dementia. The author describes and explains such variation. Moreover, the paper discusses how older people are affected by the process of globalization, migration, cultural change etc. In the empirical part of the research a sum of 350 households with older people were interviewed, and in the course of which the required data were extracted. In conclusion, it must be added that ageing affects society, economy and welfare states.
