Cristian Tunsu

PhD student, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Industrial Materials Recycling

Biography

Cristian Tunsu's competence area is analytical and separation chemistry, with direct applications in waste streams decontamination and waste processing. Cristian currently works at Chalmers University of Technology, Nuclear Chemistry and Industrial Materials Recycling (since October 2011). The doctoral research project Cristian is a part of aims at developing a sustainable and robust process for recycling of spent fluorescent lamp fractions. Attention is paid to the removal of mercury from the waste stream, and to the possibility of extracting valuable compounds (the rare earth metals contained in the phosphors powder). A hydrometallurgical approach is studied to accomplish these things: leaching of metals from the material, followed by separation of the components of interest using solvent extraction.
