About the Journal

Anesthesia

Anesthesia is the practice of inducing insensitivity to pain by the administration of gases or drugs before a surgical procedure. Anesthesia leads to a state of loss of sensitivity in the body. Anesthesia can be general or local in nature depending on the surgical procedure. An anesthetist is a physician who practices administration of anesthetics for medical procedures.

Airway Management

Airway management is done to ensure proper exchange of gases when a patient is anesthetized. Airway anatomy assessment and management plays an important role in the administration of the anesthetics during surgeries.

Related Journals: Evidence based Medicine and Practice, Journal of Pain Management & Medicine, Anesthesia and Analgesia, Critical Care and Resuscitation, Anaesthesia, European Journal of Pain, Local and Regional Anesthesia.

Fluid Management

Fluid resuscitation or fluid management is a technique of restoring fluid in the tissues of the body. This maintains tissue oxygenation and perfusion.

Related Journals: Journal of Vascular Medicine & Surgery, Journal of Pain Management & Medicine, Indian Journal of Anaesthesia.

The Pre-Operative Phase

The medical history of the patient is considered before administering an anaesthetic. An anesthetic machine is used for the delivery of gas based anesthesia while sometimes injections are also used for the administration of anesthesia before subjecting a patienty to a surgery.

Types of Anesthesia

The medical surgeries these days are performed by the usage of anesthetics which can be local, general, sedation and regional. The type of anesthetic used depends on the nature of the medical procedure.

Related Journals: General Medicine: Open Access, International Journal of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine : JEPM, Korean Journal of Anesthesiology.

Post-Operative Phase

The post-operative phase involves care and monitoring of the patient by a nurse. This phase involves the process of recovery of the patient from the effect of anesthesia and surgery. The patient should have adequate ventilation, stable hemodynamics, pain control etc. post a surgery.

Malignant Hyperthermia

it is a medical condition in which a patient gets severe muscle contractions along with high rise in body temperature when subjected to an anesthetic. High fever, rigidity of muscles, fast heart rate is some of the symptoms of the disease. This medical condition is treated using dantrolene, a muscle relaxant that prevents release of calcium ions during an attack.

Obstetrical Anesthesia

It is a form of anesthesia procedure provided to a women during childbirth. It includes anesthesia for episiotomy, labor, paracervical block, pudendal block, c- section etc.

Related Journals: Journal of Pain & Relief, International Journal of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Pain Physician, Revista Chilena de Anestesia, Revista Cubana de Anestesiología y Reanimación.

Pediatric Anesthesia

It is a branch of anesthesiology that deals with the anesthesia for infants, children, neonates etc. A pediatric anaesthesiologist specialises in administering anaesthesia to infants and children undergoing minor and major surgeries

Opioid Antagonist

The opioid antagonists acts on opioid receptors and prevents response towards opioids. These drugs are primarily used for reversing the opioid overdoses and sometimes also used to treat alcohol dependence. Naloxone, naltrexone and Nalgene are some of the common examples of opioid antagonist.

Related Journals: Journal of Pain & Relief, International Journal of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Local and Regional Anesthesia, PAIN Reports.

Muscle Relaxants

A muscle relaxant is a drug that decreases residual muscle tension and affects skeletal muscles. Neuromuscular blockers and spasmolytic are the two groups of muscle relaxants that are administered in intensive care and medical emergencies to cause temporary loss of muscle function.

Anxiolytics

These are a class of anesthetics that are used to relieve anxiety in patients. They are often referred to as minor tranquilizers. Carbamates, antihistamines, barbiturates etc. are some of the example of anxiolytics.

Related Journals: Journal of Pain & Relief, Journal of Patient Care, Pathos.

Local Anesthetics

These are a group of anesthetics that obstruct the nerve pathways and can cause loss of muscle power. Clinically aminoamide and amino ester local anesthetics are used by physicians.

Related Journals: Journal of Pain & Relief, Journal of Patient Care, Acta Anaesthesiologica Taiwanica.

Vasoactive Agents

vasoactive agents are drugs that are either used for increasing the heart rate or decreasing the heart rate. This is achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction. This helps in keeping the hemodynamics under control. For example: histamine, bradykinin, angiotensin etc.

Related Journals: Journal of Vascular Medicine & Surgery, International Journal of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Journal of Patient Care.

Antiemetics

It is a drug that is used for treating side effects of opioid analgesics and general anesthetics. They are also used as recovery drugs against chemotherapy directed medication against cancer.
