Dr. Marc Souris is Senior Researcher at IRD (French Research Institute for Development), and currently serving as IRD representative for Laos and Cambodia. His formal education is in mathematics and computer sciences at Pierre et Marie Curie University, Paris, France. He is developing algorithms, methodology and software in the field of Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Spatial Statistics since 1983. He is the principal author of the SavGIS global GIS software solution. He worked for urban planning, risk analysis and mitigation for natural disasters, geological surveys and petroleum prospecting, and spatial and environmental epidemiology and disease emergence. He develops projects in spatial epidemiology and modelling for disease emergence simulation using GIS. He has contributed to chapters in books on GIS, and developed pedagogical textbooks and manuals in GIS and remote sensing, particularly focusing on methods in Health GIS.  He is also teaching GIS at Paris-Ouest University (Master “Géographie de la Santé”) and as visiting professor at Asian institute of Technology, Thailand.
