He started as researcher in the field of neuropathology two decades ago working in close collaboration with clinicians and basic scientists. After graduating in Sweden as MD/1984; PhD/1986; licensed physician/1987 and pathologist/1991 he visited for one year (1993) the Neuropathology section at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, headed by prof. Dennis Dickson (currently at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL). In 1994-1995 he was a neuropathology fellow at the School of Medicine, Yale University, Section of Neuropathology under the supervision of prof. Laura Manuelidis and Dr. Jung H. Kim. From 1996 to 2008 he was active as senior consultant in neuropathology at Kuopio University Hospital and senior researcher at University of Eastern Finland, Department of Neuroscience and Neurology, heading the Section of Neuropathology and Kuopio Brain Bank.

He has been docent in neuropathology since 1997, professor in general pathology 2003-2004 and professor in neuropathology at University of Eastern Finland since 2007. Since 2009 He is professor in neuropathology at Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology and since 2010 He is also clinical director at the Department of Clinical Pathology, Uppsala University Hospital.
