Germany is a federal parliamentary republic in West-Central Europe. Officially it is known as the Federal Republic of Germany. Its capital city is Berlin.

Germany has a long history of scientific research into plant genetic resources. In late 1800s, German scientists recommended the collection of handcars because of the danger of them dying out. The breeding attempts made at the end of the 19th century mainly resulted from the use of genetic resources practiced by farmers.
