Dr. K. N. Sunil Kumar is working as Senior Research Officer in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry at SDM Centre for Research in Ayurveda and Allied Sciences (Centre of Excellence of AYUSH and DSIR recognized SIRO) since 1st of June 2011. After B.Sc. in Pharmacognosy from Mangalore University in Karnataka in 2004, he did M.Sc. in Medicinal Plants, securing first rank, from IPGT&RA of Gujarat Ayurved University (GAU) Jamnagar in 2006. He specialized in Pharmacognosy by a research problem entitled ‘Pharmacognostical evaluation of Cinnamomum tamala (Buch. – Ham.) Nees and Eberm. (Tamalapatra) and few of its common allied species’. In July 2006, he was appointed as Senior Research Fellow in a ICMR project ‘Quality Standards of Indian Medicinal Plants and preparation of monographs thereof’ in Capt. Srinivasa Murthi Research Institute (CCRAS, M/o Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India), Chennai. Under the project, he worked on pharmacognostical studies of 50 medicinal plants, which have been published as monographs by ICMR in volumes 7 to 11 of book ‘Quality Standards of Indian Medicinal Plants’. He has completed PhD in Medicinal Plants from the University of Madras, Chennai on ‘‘Pharmacognostical, Phytochemical and Medicinal Activity Profile of Helicanthus elastica (Desr.) Danser (Mango Mistletoe) –Loranthaceae’. He has been honored with Principal Investigatorship of 15 lakhs’ project on standardization and preparation of monograph on Ayurvedic formulations sanctioned by Pharmacopoeial Commission for Indian Medicine. He is a Co-Principal Investigator of a UGC Major Research Project worth 8.87 lakhs on standardization of Ayurvedic formulations. He has been sanctioned with seed money of Rs. 5 lakhs for research on standardization of polyherbal formulations by VGST, Govt. of Karnataka under young scientist scheme. He has 23 research papers on pharmacognosy, phytochemistry and standardization of medicinal herbs and their products. He also has 45 monographs in ICMR books to his credit. He has presented papers in 10 national and international conferences. He has delivered demonstration of pharmacognostical, phytochemical and quality control aspects of medicinal plants as resource person in 2 National seminars on Ayurveda. He is serving as Editorial advisory board member for Journal of Scientific and Innovative Research and Journal of Homeopathic and Ayurvedic Medicine. He is a reviewer in the specialty of pharmacognpsy and phytochemistry for AYU – An International Quarterly Journal of Research in Ayurveda. He is a life member of Society of Pharmacognosy. He has guided 6 M.Sc Chemistry theses, and presently co-guiding 7 M.D. (Ayu) scholars. H ehas attended 5 training programmes in Pharamcognosy, Phytpchemistry and quality control aspects of medicinal plants and their products. He is a recipient of Dr. PD Sethi award for 2 best HPTLC papers. He is dedicated to the development of traditional medicines by contributing to the quality control aspects of traditional medicines. |
