Biography

CAMPIERI Massimo was born in Bologna (Italy) on 7 November 1948. He completed his studies in Bologna, passed his secondary school leaving examination in a Scientific Liceo in July 1967 with an average of 8.10/10 and enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Bologna in November of the same year. At the end of the sixth academical year, after having passed all exams with the maximum of points and 14 honours, he graduated with a first class degree 110/110 with honours and was admitted as an internal student to the Institute of Clinica Medica I (Director Professor Labo`). He took active part in the research group of Prof. Lanfranchi, above all on subjects concerning gastrointestinal motility and inflammatory bowel diseases. During these years, in fact, he was particularly interested in the problems regarding colon motility and the epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease, on which many scientific works are based. In March 1975 he was the winner of the National Competition published by the Ministry of Education of a biennal grant of Didactic and Scientific Formation and with this authority he continued to work at the Clinica Medica I. In this same period he attended the University of Copenhagen, for investigation and study reasons, where he learned the methodology concerning the rectal mucus. In July 1976 obtained the specialization in Diseases of the Respiratory Apparatus with the maximum of the point with honours. In October 1976 he won the "F. Schiassi" prize reserved for the best specialist in internal medicine with less than five year of graduation. In January 1977 he won the British Council Bursary - a cultural organism of the British Government – allowing him to stay at the Radcliff Infirmary at Oxford where he investigated thoroughly the researches and clinical acquisitions on the subject of inflammatory bowel disease under the guidance of Prof. SC Truelove. This study period lasted from the 1st of February until the 30rd of September 1977. During this period, Prof. Campieri constantly attended the clinical surgery at Oxford and participated in several researches and in the writing of several scientific works. Once returned to Bologna he obtained on November 1977 the specialization in diseases of the digestive apparatus, with the maximum points with honours, followed by the specialization in Internal Medicine with full remarks and honours as well. In 1979 he obtained a specialization in Industrial Medicine. He hence continued with research already undertaken on the therapy of ulcerative colitis, and in particular he carried out various try outs on the therapy with several pharmacological substances, amongst which a part of Salazopirin, 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) was found to have particularly valid therapeutic effects. Using this substance it was possible to obtain a therapeutic success in a very high percentage of ulcerative colitis (90%). These results were published in the English journal "The Lancet" and are object of favorable and authoritative comments and reviews in various magazines including "Year Medical Book of Medicine; Year Medical Book of Pharmacology; Internal Symposium; Clinical Gastroenterology Canada" and others. This therapy proposed by the writer is presently accepted and recognized as valid on a world wide level. Prof. Campieri was invited as a speaker to lecture about this field of research to Milano Medicina in 1983, to the American Gastroenterology Association in May 1984 and to the American Gastroenterology Association Meeting in May 1985. From June 1981 until 1992 Prof. Campieri has been Senior Clinical Researcher at the Clinica Medica I of the University of Bologna and in this position he has carried out his own investigation on the therapy of ulcerative colitis, studying 4-aminosalicylic acid and furthering the pharmacokinetics of 5-aminosalicylic acid. In September 1985 he was speaker at a Falk Symposium on the therapy with 5-ASA. Besides this, he has taken part in other research concerning the nutritional therapy for Crohn's Disease and the evolution of indexes of inflammatory activity, with particular consideration of the presence of relapses in Crohn's Disease. He also took part in many studies on idiopathic constipation. In the last years he's continuing research on IBD therapy, Immunology and Neuroendocrine involvement. He has been speaker in many national and international meetings and he's author and co-author of a great number of scientific reports particularly on the field of IBD. The past decade he has organized 6 international seminars on IBD. Prof. Campieri is Member of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE), the European Society of Gastroenterology (EAGE), the American Society of Gastroenterology (AGA) and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG). From 1st November 1992 has been appointed as Associate Professor of Medicine at Bologna University. From July 2007 has been appointed as Full Professor of Medicine.
