“I believe my work will change the world and how we view mental illness” —Matthew D. Dovel
Matthew D. Dovel, President & Founder of International Suicide Prevention (non profit), Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Emergency Mental Health and Scientist in Human Behavioral Modification has dedicated his life’s work to understanding and preventing suicide, education services to reduce suicide rates, providing post-suicide support for families and providing tested result based solutions for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and suicidal ideation.
An innovative visionary, Dovel believes that change is essential if we’re serious about reducing the alarming statistics of non-fatal and fatal suicidal outcomes. He’s leading the push to overhaul how we’ve traditionally managed suicide prevention and he is at the forefront of the ground-breaking change. For three-decades, his pioneering work has been performance based research, development and application of new procedures for addressing stigma, identification, and permanent removal of intense emotional suffering (which has been determined to be the cause of suicidal thoughts). His theories and studies have culminated in what is officially termed—‘4 Phase’.
4 Phase is a quick and easy four-step technique—that can fit on a pocket card—and be carried out to change the thoughts of individual experiencing suicidal thoughts. The process activates the control of a naturally occurring phenomena allowing individuals to discharge the intensity of any traumatic experience. 4 Phase has been tested over many years and drew remarkable results in 2006 (and continues to) during a 24/7 Suicide Prevention hotline run by International Suicide Prevention and reduced call times from 2-3 hours to less than 20 minutes.
In 2005, Dovel delivered Suicide Intervention training at the Cree Reservation in Oujé-Bougoumou, Canada and the 4 Phase technique reduced suicides from 1 non-fatal attempt per and 1 fatal outcome per month to 1 non-fatal attempt per month and ZERO fatal outcomes in the subsequent six months. 4 Phase procedures were officially released on the International Suicide Prevention website in 2014—which attracts upwards of 300 visitors per day. Since the launch, the Hotline calls have dramatically decreased from multiple daily calls to a couple per week. Dovel has also determined that individuals should not be removed from a vocation due to depression, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress, or suicidal thoughts and he confidently credits 4 Phase to being able to address and rectify the ideology swiftly and without the need for medication.
ARMY TRAINING: Dovel has provided contracted training during National Depression Screening Week in 2005 for the US Army at Fort Benning, Georgia to deliver training, across all levels to active duty personnel during pre-deployment and re-deployment and included Physicians, Medics, Nurses, Behavioral Health Care Providers, and Chaplains on the warning signs of alcohol abuse, drug addiction, suicide awareness and prevention.
